We aren’t the only ones who want to spend more time outside during the summer months. Our beloved pets want to be out there too. As pet owners, it is our responsibility to keep them safe. Be on the lookout for these summer pests that may cause harm to your furry companions:
As bees and wasps are flying around, it may be tempting for your dog or cat to chase and snap at them. It’s common for pets to be stung around the mouth, nose or muzzle area. If your pet does get stung, watch for signs of an allergic reaction and contact your veterinarian.
Fleas are one of the most common pest issues for pets. Dogs and cats can get fleas from being outside and around other animals. One female flea can have 25,000 offspring in one month which can quickly result in an infestation. The best defense is to use a flea prevention medicine, bathe your pets, vacuum carpets, and wash pet bedding regularly.
Mosquitoes are not only dangerous to humans, but can be harmful to pets as well. The biggest concern is heartworm. This parasitic worm can be spread by mosquito bites. It’s extremely important to speak to your veterinarian about medication to prevent heartworm.
Our pets can contract a lot of the same diseases from a tick bite as humans such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis. In addition to talking to your veterinarian about tick prevention medication, a pest control professional can apply a barrier treatment to your yard which will reduce the tick population around your home. If you find a tick on your pet, remove it immediately by using tweezers and grasping the tick as close to the skin as possible.
There are preventative steps you can take to protect your pets:
Inspect your pet thoroughly after spending time outside
Bathe your dog regularly
Keep your lawn trimmed
Consult your veterinarian
