Seeing flying ants in the house at night can be startling, especially when they seem to appear all at once. The reason why flying ants suddenly appear at night is due to a natural process called nuptial flight. Warm, humid evenings prompt winged ants to leave their nests to mate and establish new colonies, and bright lights often draw them indoors.
It’s easy to confuse termites and flying ants, as they both can swarm around the same time of year. There are key differences to be aware of, though. Flying ants have narrow waists and bent antennae, while termites have straight antennae and a thicker body.
