Are fire ants invasive?

Ehrlich Answers

"Are red imported fire ants an invasive species in the US, or did they originate here naturally?"

Both red imported fire ants and black imported fire ants are invasive species. Of the two, it is the red imported fire ant that causes most concern.

Originally from South America, red imported fire ants have spread to the southern United States. Their rapid reproduction, aggressive behavior, and adaptability allow them to dominate new environments. As an invasive species, fire ants disrupt local ecosystems by outcompeting native species, damaging plants, and threatening wildlife.

In the U.S. alone, fire ants are estimated to cost around $6 billion annually — covering control measures, medical treatment, and damage to property. These costs arise because these invasive species (notably the red imported fire ant) build mounds in lawns, fields, and around infrastructure, disrupt agriculture, and damage electrical equipment. Their mounds can harm crops and even pose risks to livestock and humans, as stings can be painful or, in some cases, dangerous – red fire ant stings can lead to local allergic reactions, systematic reactions like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and trouble breathing or swallowing, and even anaphylaxis in rare cases.

Black imported fire ants are less common but equally invasive. They also originate from South America and have spread into parts of the southern United States. These ants build smaller, less conspicuous mounds but can still disrupt ecosystems and agriculture. Like their red relatives, black imported fire ants are aggressive, sting humans and animals, and compete with native species for resources.

The bottom line: Invasive fire ants aren’t just a nuisance — they cause billions of dollars of damage every year, threaten biodiversity, disrupt infrastructure, and pose a public-health risk. Because the costs associated with them are so high and widespread, many governmental and other organisations are investing heavily in research into fire ant control measures.
