Mulch can set up the conditions that termites like: shade, steady moisture, and hidden travel paths. They’re drawn to the damp soil and the cover it provides more than the chips themselves. You might find termites in mulch after rain, but the bigger concern is what’s underneath: soft, wet soil next to wood on your home.
Do termites eat mulch? Termites feed on cellulose, but most shredded products are partially decomposed and less attractive than structural wood. The risk comes when deep layers hold water against the siding or bury the foundation line. To lower risk, keep mulch two to three inches deep, pull it back six to twelve inches from siding, maintain a visible foundation gap, fix leaks, and aim sprinklers away from walls.
In short, mulch can help termites thrive nearby, which raises the chance they find entry points. If you’re still worried about wood mulch and termites, book a termite inspection with one of our technicians.
