Can termites eat through concrete?

Ehrlich Answers

"My neighbor says termites could have caused the small cracks in my basement floor. Do termites eat concrete?"

Termites are well-known for their ability to form large colonies and devour material in nature and our man-made structures. But while these pests can pose a significant risk to the structural integrity of wooden elements of our homes, termites cannot eat or digest concrete. Their diet is made up of cellulose, which is found in wood, paper, and other plant-based materials. This doesn’t mean your concrete slab or foundation is safe from them.

If you’ve noticed termites on a concrete wall, it usually means they’ve found a pathway through a crack, expansion joint, or even the space around plumbing.  Once they have gotten inside, they could infest the wood framing, flooring, or other cellulose materials that your home is built from.

Sealing the cracks and gaps within concrete or brick around your home can help reduce the chances of termites getting in. Our technicians can inspect your home to check for the presence of termites and, if necessary, implement a custom termite control treatment plan to help remove infestations and help ensure long-term protection.
