What are these small black beetles in my house?

Ehrlich Answers

"I keep seeing little black beetles in my house. What are they, and will they bite?"

If you're seeing tiny black beetles in your home, they're most likely carpet beetles. Adult carpet beetles are usually round or oval, about one-eighth of an inch long, and can look shiny, mottled, or dull black.

Carpet beetles don't bite, but their larvae can damage fabrics, carpets, and stored items. The larvae tend to stay hidden in closets, along baseboards, or under furniture.

What can I do about carpet beetles?

These tiny black carpet beetles usually get in through cracks around windows and doors, gaps in siding, vents, or on flowers and plants brought inside. Once they're in, they can go unnoticed for weeks or months.

Vacuuming carpets and furniture thoroughly, washing or dry-cleaning natural fiber items, and sealing cracks around windows and doors can help to keep them out. Also consider storing seasonal clothing in sealed bins and regularly checking stored food.
