What are the kitchen insects most similar to cockroaches?

Ehrlich Answers

"I found a bug in my kitchen that looks like a cockroach. Could it be something else?"

Yes. Not every insect you find in the kitchen that looks like a cockroach actually is one. Several common household insects share a similar size, color, or shape, which can make identification tricky at first glance. Below are some insects in the kitchen you may be confusing with cockroaches.

Carpet beetles

Carpet beetles are common kitchen insects, small, oval, and brown or black. From a distance, they can look like young cockroaches. In your kitchen, adults can be found near windows, baseboards, or light sources. While adult carpet beetles don’t feed on food, their larvae can damage stored goods, fabrics, and pantry items.

Drugstore beetles and cigarette beetles

These two pantry pests are frequently mistaken for small roaches. They’re similar in size, reddish-brown in color, and often found in cupboards or near stored food. Unlike cockroaches, these beetles are closely tied to dry goods like flour, cereal, spices, or pet food. If they’re present, it usually points to an infested food item rather than a wider kitchen infestation.

Click beetles

Click beetles are longer and narrower than cockroaches, but their dark color and quick movement can cause confusion. When flipped onto their backs, they make a clicking sound as they snap upright. These insects don’t infest food and usually wander indoors by accident, often attracted to lights.

Young cockroaches (nymphs)

In some cases, the small kitchen roach really is a cockroach, just an immature one. Nymphs lack wings and are often mistaken for beetles due to their smaller size. Finding them in kitchens is a concern, since it can point to an active cockroach population.
