Bed bugs are resilient pests. They feed on blood, but they don't need to eat every day, and can go surprisingly long periods without a meal.
How often do bed bugs feed?
How often bed bugs feed depends on their life stage, the temperature, and how readily available a host is. In general, adult bed bugs feed every five to seven days when a host is present. A single bed bug feeding session can take a bug from flat to visibly engorged, swelling to up to six times its body weight in blood. Once fed, it retreats to a hiding spot to digest and, if conditions are right, reproduce.
Nymphs (young bed bugs) need to feed more frequently because they require a blood meal before each molt as they develop through their five growth stages.
