How long can bed bugs survive without food?

Bed bugs are resilient pests. They feed on blood, but they don't need to eat every day, and can go surprisingly long periods without a meal.

How often do bed bugs feed?

How often bed bugs feed depends on their life stage, the temperature, and how readily available a host is. In general, adult bed bugs feed every five to seven days when a host is present. A single bed bug feeding session can take a bug from flat to visibly engorged, swelling to up to six times its body weight in blood. Once fed, it retreats to a hiding spot to digest and, if conditions are right, reproduce.

Nymphs (young bed bugs) need to feed more frequently because they require a blood meal before each molt as they develop through their five growth stages.

How long can a bed bug survive without food?

A bed bug can survive without food for longer than you’d think. According to the UC Statewide IPM Program, bed bugs can go without feeding for 20 to 400 days, depending on temperature and humidity. Adults have survived without food for more than 400 days in laboratory conditions at low temperatures.

In typical home conditions, most adult bed bugs can survive for several months without a blood meal. They do this by:

  • Slowing their metabolism to conserve energy
  • Using stored nutrients from previous meals
  • Entering a near-dormant state, reducing activity to a minimum

This ability to lie low for extended periods is one of the reasons bed bug infestations can be so difficult to detect and treat, because a room that appears clear may still harbor dormant bugs.

Does life stage affect survival?

Younger nymphs are the most vulnerable and can only survive a few weeks without feeding. Older nymphs and adults are far more resilient. This means that even if you temporarily remove a food source, such as vacating a room or traveling, it's unlikely to resolve an infestation on its own.

Do bed bugs feed every night?

Bed bugs don't feed every night, even when a host is ready and present. They tend to feed every few days, retreating to their hiding spots between meals to digest and reproduce.

Because bites may not appear immediately and reactions vary widely between individuals, some people don't realize they've been bitten for days or even weeks. By the time bites become obvious, an infestation may already be well established.

What does this mean for treatment?

The fact that bed bugs can survive for months without feeding has real implications for how infestations are treated, because DIY methods rarely reach every hiding spot or account for bugs that may be dormant. Professional treatment targets bed bugs at all life stages and in all their hiding places.

If you suspect an infestation, our pest control experts can carry out a thorough inspection and put a plan in place.

Frequently asked questions

No, bed bugs don't feed every night; only when a host is nearby, and conditions are right.

Most bed bugs feed roughly once a week, though nymphs may feed more frequently as they need blood meals to grow and molt. Factors like temperature and access to a host can push that interval in either direction.  If feeding opportunities are limited, bed bugs can go weeks — or even months — without a meal.
