What are these tiny black bugs that bite?

Ehrlich Answers

"I have lots of tiny bug bites from small black bugs. What could they be?"

Several common pests fit the description of ‘little black bugs that bite.’ Below are the most common culprits we hear about.

Fleas

Small black fleas are a common culprit – especially if you have pets. Fleas are usually found on pets, and hiding in carpets, rugs, or upholstered furniture. Bites often show up around ankles and lower legs and may appear in clusters.

Unlike many other small pests that crawl or scurry, fleas are powerful jumpers. They can leap up to 150 times their own body length, which often makes them appear to vanish or pop in and out of sight when you try to get a closer look.  If you notice tiny dark specks that suddenly disappear with a spring-like motion when disturbed, it is a strong indicator of a flea presence.

Bed bugs

Bed bugs aren’t always black, but young bed bugs and unfed adults can appear dark and certainly fit the description of tiny black insects. Bed bugs hide well during the day, so bites may be the first sign something’s wrong. Their bites commonly appear in lines or clusters on exposed skin, such as arms, neck, or shoulders.

Biting midges (no-see-ums)

Biting midges are small, black flying bugs that bite – they’re often black or dark gray and are more common in warm, humid areas and near water. Their bites are often painful and itchy, and usually happen outdoors or near windows and doors.

Mites

Some mites are nearly invisible but can still cause itchy bites or skin irritation. These issues may be linked to birds, rodents, or other animals nearby.
