German vs. American cockroaches - what's the difference?

What is the difference between German and American cockroaches?

Quick comparison: American cockroaches vs. German cockroaches

  • German cockroaches are small, fast-breeding indoor roaches, and among the hardest to control.
  • American cockroaches are larger, reddish-brown, and prefer warm, damp areas.
  • German roaches rarely fly; American cockroaches can and occasionally do.
  • German cockroaches spread rapidly indoors; American cockroaches often enter from outside.
  • Both species can contaminate food and trigger allergic reactions in some people.

The difference between German and American cockroaches

Both species are found across the U.S., but they behave very differently. Knowing which one you're dealing with matters because the treatments they demand can differ.

German cockroach

Blattella germanica is the most common cockroach found inside homes and businesses. Despite the name, it's found worldwide and thrives almost exclusively indoors.

  • Appearance — About 0.5 inches long; light brown with two dark parallel stripes behind the head
  • Habitat — Kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere warm and humid indoors
  • Behavior — Nocturnal; reproduces rapidly; rarely flies despite having wings
  • Risks — Can trigger asthma and allergies; can contaminate food and surfaces with droppings and shed skins

American cockroach

Periplaneta americana is the largest common cockroach species in the U.S. Despite the name, it originated in Africa. It's often called a "water bug" or "palmetto bug" in the South.

  • Appearance — 1.5 to 2 inches long; reddish-brown
  • Habitat — Sewers, drains, basements, and damp utility areas; can move indoors from outside
  • Behavior — Nocturnal; capable of flight in warm conditions; moves quickly
  • Risks — Can spread bacteria and pathogens picked up in sewers; may contaminate food preparation areas

Signs of an infestation

The signs of both species overlap, but location is a key clue. German cockroaches tend to stay close to kitchens and bathrooms. So, look for small, dark droppings resembling ground pepper, shed skins, egg cases, and a musty odor.

American cockroaches are more likely to appear near drains, basements, or utility rooms. Spotting either species during the day can indicate a larger problem, as it means infestations have developed.

Prevention tips

Good sanitation is your first line of defense against both German and American roaches. Try to keep kitchens clean and free of crumbs, store food in sealed containers, fix leaky pipes, and reduce moisture in bathrooms and basements. Seal gaps around pipes, drains, and entry points to limit access from outside.

Both species are resilient, and German cockroaches in particular can develop resistance to over-the-counter treatments. If you're seeing signs of either roach, professional cockroach control is the most reliable way to treat an infestation.

Roaches can be difficult to remove without professional pest control.
