How to tell if a wasp’s nest is active

The most reliable sign is wasp traffic. Watch the nest from a safe distance for a few minutes. If wasps are consistently flying in and out the nest is active and the colony is still foraging. An abandoned nest will be completely still, with nothing landing on or entering it, no matter how long you observe.

Time of year and physical condition of the next also offer useful clues. Wasps are most active in late summer and autumn, and colonies die off completely after the first hard frost, so a nest spotted in winter is almost certainly empty. Actively maintained nests also tend to look intact, with a clean papery surface, while abandoned ones often appear tattered, discoloured, or falling apart.
