Wasps can release an alarm pheromone when they sense danger near their colony, and nearby worker wasps can pick up on this chemical signal and become defensive. If a wasp is killed or disturbed close to an active nest, defending workers may detect the signal and react aggressively, sometimes toward the exact spot where the disturbance took place.

So the concern is more about how close the wasp is to the rest of the colony. If you find yourself near a nest, the safest move is to back away calmly rather than swat at it, since sudden movements or crushed wasps in that environment can escalate things quickly.
