Yes, several wasp species do nest underground. Yellowjackets are the most common culprits in the U.S. While they also build nests adobe ground level (in trees, eaves, etc.), they frequently build their papery nests in abandoned rodent burrows or other soil cavities. A single colony can contain thousands of workers, making an accidental disturbance — like stepping near the entrance or running a lawnmower over it — genuinely dangerous.

Other ground-nesting species include cicada killer wasps and various solitary wasps, though these tend to be far less aggressive than yellowjackets. While inaccurate, these underground-nesting species are sometimes called “ground hornets”.
