Rodents like mice and rats can chew through wires, contaminate food, and spread disease. That’s why effective rodent control is so important. While both professionals and homeowners alike opt for methods such as rodent traps and baits, other rodent control products exist on the market, including ultrasonic rodent repellers. But do these actually keep mice and rats away?
Products like plug-in mouse repellents claim to drive pests away using ultrasonic sound. The idea is that high-frequency noise irritates or confuses mice while remaining inaudible to people. But in practice, results are often mixed. Mice may avoid an area briefly, but they quickly adapt. That’s why relying only on sound devices for mice usually doesn’t solve an infestation.
Similar devices are marketed for rats, with the same principle in mind. Like with mice, the solution is not reliable. Rats may be startled at first, but they become accustomed to the noise. Additionally, the high-frequency sound only reaches so far and may be blocked by walls or other objects in the home. Because of this, sonic pest repellers are not considered a long-term or especially effective solution.
