Meanwhile, find out more details about the spider bites you should watch out for as a Florida resident.
You’ve probably heard of the black widow spider and its notorious bite. Southern black widow spiders are the ones you might see in Florida. They are black with a red hourglass on their abdomen. If you are bitten by a black widow spider, you may have no reaction, but it can also lead to more side effects. You may feel tingling, chills, an increase in your blood pressure, nausea and fatigue.
Black widow spider bites can be fatal. This is rare, but you should take caution, especially if you have young children. If you think you have been bitten by a black widow spider, see a medical expert as soon as possible.
Black widow spiders may be located in places like your garage or basement, in piles of firewood, or beneath stones. Be careful when you’re in these areas at your home or business.
The brown widow spider is also found in Florida. Like its name suggests, this spider is grayish brown or brown in color. It has three white spots. Its egg sacs have an interesting shape, covered in small spikes.
The symptoms that occur due to a brown widow spider bite may not be as serious as those of a black widow spider. The 1993 study published in the South African Medical Journal states that, “It was evident that black widow spider bites caused a more severe form of envenomation than brown widow bites.”
Still, if you are bitten by what appears to be a brown widow spider and encounter alarming symptoms, seek medical help. Brown widow spiders live in sheltered locations like the garage and beneath eaves.
Next is the brown recluse spider and its infamous bite. Although rare, this spider can be found in Florida. The brown recluse spider favors locations where it will not be bothered (such as your attic or basement). It ranges from 1 to 1 ½ inch in length, with a mark shaped like a violin.
The brown recluse bite can result in nausea, fever, and a sore. In more severe cases, it could also result in tissue damage. It’s also possible that kidney failure and seizures could occur, but this is rare. In any case, watch out for brown recluse spiders and do not attempt to aggravate them if you happen to see one.
Keep in mind that most spider bites simply involve pain and some swelling, along with redness and itchiness. Use extra caution if you have kids, because bites may affect them more significantly. If any serious symptoms arise when you or someone you know is bitten by a spider, contact a medical professional immediately. Stay alert when you’re around places where spiders tend to hide. Remember that spiders will likely only bite if you provoke them or if they sense a threat.
