Arachnophobia: 43,000 species, 8 legs…1 big fear

Ever since a laboratory in the Arizona desert lost control of a giant spider in the 1955 thriller, “Tarantula,” spiders have starred in many a horror film. Why are spiders so perfect for scary movies? Even at their smallest, these arthropods often have a way of sending a chill up your spine. The American Psychiatric Association reports that 10% of people in the United States have phobias, 40% of which are bug-related phobias (spiders included).
