What is a zombie caterpillar?

Ehrlich Answers

"I’ve read about zombie caterpillars. Are they real?"

A zombie caterpillar isn’t a new species - it’s a name used to describe what happens when a parasite takes over a caterpillar’s body. Certain fungi, bacteria, or viruses can infect a caterpillar, changing the way it behaves. Instead of feeding and moving normally, the insect is manipulated by the infection - which eventually kills it.

In the instance of zombie caterpillars, the fungus forces the caterpillar to climb higher up plants before it dies. This position helps the fungus spread more effectively to other insects below. To someone who finds one, the sight of a caterpillar zombie clinging unnaturally to a stem or leaf can look unsettling.

These “zombie viruses” can affect many insects, hence the existence of the zombie moth, and are an excellent representation of just how brutal and ruthless life is in the insect world. If you come across a dead caterpillar with strange growths or behavior, it’s most likely due to a natural caterpillar infection, and you’re not at risk.
