Palmetto bugs vs. roaches: What's the difference?

Ehrlich Answers

What's the difference between a palmetto bug vs. a cockroach, or are palmetto bugs cockroaches?

The short answer is that palmetto bugs are cockroaches. The name "palmetto bug" is a regional nickname, used mostly in the South, for the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), or the smokybrown cockroach (Periplaneta fuliginosa), a close relative that's common in the Southeast and shares similar habits.

So if someone tells you they have a palmetto roach problem, they're talking about the same pest you'd call a cockroach anywhere else in the country.

Should I be worried if I’ve spotted a palmetto cockroach in my home?

Palmetto roaches are worth taking seriously. Like all cockroach species, they can contaminate food and surfaces and may trigger allergies or asthma in sensitive individuals. Seeing one or two doesn't always mean a full infestation, but it's worth investigating, especially if they're appearing regularly indoors.

If you're dealing with a recurring problem, Ehrlich's cockroach control services can help identify where they're coming from and put a proper treatment plan in place.
