Copper mesh vs. steel wool: what keeps rodents away?

Quick overview

  • Mice squeeze through gaps as small as 1/4 inch, so small openings matter
  • Steel wool is affordable but rusts quickly in damp or outdoor conditions
  • Copper mesh resists corrosion better, making it ideal for exterior, moist areas
  • Loosely packed materials get worked loose; tight packing and sealing is essential
  • Professional-grade mesh, like our Flexi Armour™, offers tougher, longer-term protection

If you've started researching how to seal up your home, you've probably come across two popular options: copper mesh vs. steel wool for mice and rats. Both can work as a short-term barrier, but neither is as simple as "stuff it in a hole and forget about it."

Below, we look at how these two materials hold up against gnawing teeth – and why, ultimately,  a professional rodent exclusion plan tends to offer more reliable, lasting protection.

Why rodents need so little room to get in

Before comparing materials, it helps to understand what you're up against. Mice can flatten their bodies and fit through openings as small as a dime, while rats can squeeze through gaps around the size of a quarter.

A rodent rule: if the skull fits, the rest of the body usually follows.

Common weak points include gaps around pipes, vents, utility lines, garage door seals, and foundation cracks. Since rodents' front teeth never stop growing, they're also driven to gnaw constantly, which means even a tight seal can be tested and widened over time.

How steel wool holds up

Steel wool is a popular choice for DIY exclusion work because it's cheap and widely available at most hardware stores. Its fine, sharp fibers are uncomfortable for rodents to chew through, and most mice will give up once they hit the material head-on.

Rats present more of a challenge. Their jaws are stronger, and a loosely packed pad of steel wool can get pushed aside or gradually worked loose rather than chewed clean through. The real weak point usually isn't the material itself; it's how it's installed. If steel wool isn't packed tightly and sealed in place with caulk or expanding foam, rodents are likely to pull it out or squeeze past it.

Steel wool's other drawback is that it rusts fairly quickly once exposed to moisture, which makes it a poor long-term fit for exterior gaps, basements, or damp crawl spaces.

How copper mesh compares

Copper mesh works on a similar principle: dense fibers that rodents find uncomfortable to chew, but it doesn't corrode the way steel wool does. That makes it a stronger option for exterior entry points and areas with regular moisture, such as around dryer vents or plumbing penetrations.

It's rare for a rodent to get through a properly packed section of copper mesh, since the fibers hold their shape and resist compression better than steel wool over time.

The trade-off is cost: copper mesh is pricier than steel wool and can be harder to track down at smaller hardware stores.

How long does either material actually last?

This depends on thickness, how tightly it's packed, and how determined the animal is to find another way in. A loosely stuffed pad might fail within days, while a properly compacted, sealed application can last a few weeks.

This is part of why DIY exclusion can be hard to get right on your own. Our technicians use a different material for this kind of work: Flexi Armour™, a knitted steel mesh that holds its shape under constant pressure rather than loosening or compacting over time. It also resists rust and weather damage, so it keeps working through rain, humidity, and seasonal changes rather than breaking down within weeks.

Paired with a full inspection to catch every entry point, professional rodent control tends to hold up far longer than a DIY fix.

Need long-term help with rodents?

DIY fixes like steel wool and copper mesh can buy you some time, but they're rarely a complete, lasting solution on their own. For more durable, weather-resistant protection, try Flexi Armour™, designed specifically to withstand persistent gnawing and outdoor conditions.

Our pest-proofing armor deters rodents without harming them, reducing the need for chemicals and showing our commitment to humane treatment and sustainability.
