How to clean up mouse and rat droppings

Quick overview

  • Ventilate the area for at least thirty minutes before cleaning
  • Never sweep or vacuum dry droppings, as this spreads contaminated dust
  • Wet droppings and urine with disinfectant before wiping them up
  • Double-bag waste and disinfect gloves before removing them
  • Call a professional for heavy infestations or hard-to-reach areas

Rodent droppings and urine are unpleasant to find, not least because they signal a rodent infestation. But they can also carry pathogens like Hantavirus, Salmonella, and leptospirosis. Disturbing dried droppings can release contaminated dust into the air, and that's the main way these diseases spread to people, according to the CDC.

Before you clean up rodent droppings, always wear the right personal protective equipment (PPE):

  • Rubber or plastic gloves
  • A disposable mask or respirator
  • Protective eyewear (for heavy infestations)
  • Old clothing you can wash or dispose of afterward

If you don't have the right personal protective equipment (PPE), or you're not sure about what you're doing, give us a call. Our technicians are trained to handle rat feces removal and rodent pest control safely, so you don't have to take on the risk yourself.

What you'll need for rodent feces removal

Gather your supplies before you begin so you're not searching for them mid-clean:

  • PPE (see above)
  • An EPA-registered disinfectant or a bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water)
  • Paper towels or disposable rags
  • A sealable plastic bag for waste
  • A mop or sponge for hard floors

Step-by-step: mouse and rat droppings cleanup

  1. Ventilate first. Open windows and doors, then leave the room for about thirty minutes before you go back in.
  2. Put on your gloves. Avoid touching your face while cleaning.
  3. Spray, don't sweep. Saturate the droppings and surrounding area with disinfectant and let it sit for five minutes or as the label instructs.
  4. Wipe up the mess. Use paper towels to collect the droppings and cleaning solution, then throw them straight into a sealed bag.
  5. Disinfect the surface. Mop or wipe down the area again once the droppings are removed.
  6. Wash up. Clean your gloved hands before removing the gloves, then wash your hands thoroughly.

This process works for both rat droppings and mouse droppings. The steps don't change much between species, just the scale of the job.

How to clean mouse urine and rat urine

Cleaning mouse urine follows a similar approach to droppings, but urine stains can be harder to spot, especially on carpet or fabric.

  • Hard surfaces: Spray with disinfectant, let it soak, then wipe clean with paper towels.
  • Carpets and upholstery: Shampoo with a commercial disinfectant or steam clean once the area has dried.
  • Bedding and clothing: Wash in hot water with detergent, then dry on a high heat setting.
  • Books and papers: Leave them outside in direct sunlight for several hours, or isolate them indoors for a few weeks if that's not possible.

Blot (don't scrub) the area with disinfectant, allow it to air dry fully, and avoid using the item again until it's completely dry and odor-free.

When to call in the professionals

DIY cleanup can work for a single, small area, but it's a different story when you're dealing with an infestation in a commercial setting, a larger infestation, hidden nests in walls or attics, or droppings in a ventilation system. In these cases, we'd always recommend professional rodent control rather than tackling it alone. We can help with rodent droppings removal and cleanup.

Our technicians use chemical-free rodent control methods where possible, alongside rodent exclusion to help stop the problem coming back. If you're seeing recurring droppings even after cleanup, it's a sign there's still an active infestation that cleaning alone won't solve.
