Mites vs. bed bugs - what's the difference?

What is the difference between mites and bed bugs?

Quick comparison: mites vs. bed bugs

  • Dust mites are microscopic arachnids, invisible to the naked eye without magnification.
  • Bed bugs are visible insects that feed on human blood, usually at night.
  • Dust mites don't bite; skin reactions come from an allergic response to their waste.
  • Bed bugs leave physical evidence; dust mites are an allergen management issue, not an infestation.

The difference between mites and bed bugs

Mites and bed bugs are often confused because both are associated with bedding, and both can cause skin irritation. That’s broadly where the similarities end. Mites and bed bugs are entirely different creatures, with different biology, and different risks.

Dust mites

Dust mites are microscopic arachnids found in virtually every home. They're not parasites; they don't bite or burrow into skin. Instead, they feed on dead skin cells shed by humans and pets. They can cause allergic reactions to their waste and shed exoskeletons.

  • Appearance — Too small to see with the human eye; oval-shaped, eight-legged; creamy white; less than 1mm long.
  • Habitat — Mattresses, pillows, carpets, upholstered furniture, and soft furnishings; anywhere dead skin cells accumulate.
  • Behavior — Do not bite; cause allergic reactions through airborne waste particles and shed skin.
  • Risks: Can trigger asthma, eczema flare-ups, and allergic rhinitis in sensitive individuals.

Bed bugs

Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that feed exclusively on blood, usually while you sleep. Unlike dust mites, they are visible to the naked eye and leave behind clear physical evidence of their presence.

  • Appearance — About 6mm long; flat, oval, reddish-brown; swell and darken after feeding; visible to the naked eye.
  • Habitat — Mattress seams, bed frames, box springs, behind baseboards, and in furniture crevices near sleeping areas.
  • Behavior — Feed on blood at night; hide during the day; spread easily via luggage, clothing, and secondhand furniture.
  • Risks — Bites cause itchy, red welts; bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, but infestations can spread rapidly.

Signs of an infestation

Dust mites leave no visible trace; the signs are physical symptoms: persistent sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny nose, or skin irritation that worsens in the bedroom.

Bed bugs are a different story. Look for small red bites in lines or clusters on exposed skin, reddish-brown stains on bedding, dark fecal spots on mattress seams, or a musty odor in the room. If you're finding any of these signs, it’s best to call in a bed bug control technician, because infestations can spread fast.

Prevention tips

For dust mites, keeping on top of the laundry is your best bet. Wash bedding weekly in hot water, use allergen-proof mattress and pillow covers, and vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture frequently. Keeping indoor humidity below 50% can also help.

Preventing bed bugs is largely about vigilance, and treating them is difficult. Inspect hotel rooms when traveling, check secondhand furniture before bringing it home, and keep luggage off the floor to reduce the risk of bringing bed bugs home.

Our technicians use a range of targeted treatments to help rid you of infestations.
