Are yellow sac spiders dangerous?

If you've found a small yellow spider in your house, there's a good chance it's a yellow sac spider (Cheiracanthium inclusum or Cheiracanthium mildei). These are among the most common spiders found inside U.S. homes, and while they can bite, they're not considered dangerous to most people.

How to identify a yellow sac spider

Yellow sac spiders are small and easy to overlook, but a few key features can help you spot them:

• Color: Pale yellow, cream, or light greenish-yellow body, sometimes with a faint orange-brown stripe along the abdomen.
• Size: Small, typically between ¼ and ⅜ of an inch long. If you've seen a small yellow house spider scurrying across a wall or ceiling, this fits the profile.
• Legs: Long and thin, with the front pair noticeably longer than the rest. Leg tips are darker brown.
• No web: Unlike many spiders, yellow sac spiders don't spin webs to catch prey. Instead, they build small silk sacs — often tucked into ceiling corners or behind picture frames — where they rest during the day.
• Active at night: These are nocturnal hunters. Spotting a fast-moving yellow spider in your house after dark is a good indication of this species.
• Seasonal timing: They're more likely to come indoors in fall and winter, when cooler temperatures push them to seek warmth.
