How big can an ant colony get?

Ant colony sizes vary massively across species. Most common colonies you'd encounter around your home contain anywhere from 20,000 to 100,000 workers. Some species can push well beyond that, though.

Carpenter ants, for example, usually top out at around 10,000–15,000 workers in a mature colony. Fire ants can reach 250,000 or more. And then there are species like Argentine ants, which build supercolonies. The world's largest ant colony is an Argentine ant supercolony stretching over 3,700 miles across southern Europe, believed to contain billions of ants.

How to tell how big an ant colony is

There's no easy way to tell how big an ant colony is from the outside. The ants you actually see foraging represent only a small fraction of the total population. The bulk of the colony stays hidden underground or inside walls, tending to the queen and her eggs.

Signs of a larger colony include multiple entry points, trails that come back even after cleaning, and activity in several areas of your property at once. If you're seeing ants in more than one location, the nest is likely well established.
