Myth: Busted

Termites are known as “silent destroyers” because of their ability to chew through drywall, wood, flooring, and even wallpaper undetected. Anything containing cellulose can be a target for these pests.

Living in a brick house doesn’t ensure your safety from this destructive pest. Homes made of brick may be more difficult for termites to enter, but they are not completely safe. Although termites don’t eat brick or concrete, they can still access wooden frames and other cellulose-based materials in your home.

If you’re dealing with termites, a termite cardboard trap can be a helpful DIY method for monitoring their activity. Cardboard, which contains cellulose, attracts termites, and using it as a trap allows you to detect their presence early. However, for significant infestations, combining DIY methods with professional treatment is essential.

As a homeowner, there are steps you can take to prevent termites:

• Do not stack firewood near your home – keep woodpiles at least 25 feet away.

• Keep mulch pulled back away from the foundation of your home.

• Repair all leaks and moisture issues right away.

• Use treated wood for building decks, gazebos, sheds, etc.

• Have an annual termite inspection.
