What are cockroaches?

Roaches are insects from the scientific order Blattodea, which is the same order that also contains termites. It is unknown just how many species of cockroach are on the planet, but estimates range somewhere around 4,600, with 30 of those species generally found in close proximity to humans.

Cockroaches are scavengers. This means roaches will eat just about any organic substance they can get their mandibles on. They love to eat food set out for humans, but are also fond of scrounging around in garbage cans and dumpsters to eat discarded scraps from meat to bread as well as other substances. Cockroaches will eat meat, vegetables and fruit.

Types of cockroaches in Tampa, FL

There are several different types of cockroach found across the central Florida region. Four of the most common include:

  • Palmetto bug AKA American Cockroach- probably the one seen most often around the Tampa area, this is the type of cockroach that can fly. American cockroaches have wings longer than their bodies and prefer the warm, humid parts of a house like bathrooms, kitchens and attics.
  • German cockroaches - one of the most common cockroach species across North America. These roaches really love the warmest parts of the house and are probably the most stereotypical-looking cockroach if you think about roaches. They are a very hardy species and capable of adapting to a variety of situations.
  • Asian cockroaches - ththis roach looks a lot like the German cockroach. They tend to come out at night and often  the type of cockroach you see scurrying for cover when the kitchen light is turned on at night. Asian cockroaches do have wings they can use to fly, whereas German cockroaches do not fly.
  • Smoky brown cockroach - the name of this particular cockroach describes their distinctive color. These species of roach are very good fliers and many Floridians often get them confused with Asian cockroaches. They have a shiny head and are quite the eaters, eating anything from decaying plants to animal feces.

Are cockroaches in Tampa, FL, dangerous?

When people find cockroaches around their Tampa property, they often worry they are dangerous or that there are health risks associated with them. The fact is, there are some health risks associated with cockroaches, but they do not usually bite and are not venomous.

Where the health risks of cockroaches reside is the fact they frequent garbage, sewers and other areas filled with bacteria and materials which can then be transferred to food preparation areas. Cockroaches can be found on dead animals, through dumpsters, across animal feces and other undesirable areas. If they get into a home and then walk across kitchen counters, cutting boards or other food prep areas, this can transfer bacteria which can make a person sick with food poisoning.

Cockroaches in Tampa can carry diseases and should be removed as soon as an infestation is detected.

Do Tampa cockroaches fly?

There are some species of cockroaches in Tampa that do have wings and fly. In fact, all cockroaches have wings, but some species of cockroach do not choose to fly. The American Cockroach and Asian cockroach are both known to be good flyers and will fly when they feel threatened.

Cockroaches have sets of wings they fold over their backs. They actually have two sets and they are common among all species. The first set of wings includes  two inner wings which they use to fly and over those are two other wings which are hard and shell-like that protect the wings beneath. Most species of cockroach prefer to stay on the ground and crawl, but the few listed above, as well as a few other species from around the world, do fly.

Getting rid of cockroaches in Tampa

The best way to get rid of cockroaches is to hire a professional to get rid of any infestation currently in the property. Cockroaches can hide in many places, so they can be very difficult to get rid of without a professional treatment plan to remove the existing roaches and prevent new ones.

Once the infestation has been removed, the best bet is to prevent further cockroach infestations by doing the following:

  • Make sure areas around your home are clean. Sweep the floors and get rid of garbage and food debris from kitchen counters and floors.
  • Keep garbage cans away from your home. If you live near dumpsters, see if they can be moved further away from your home and any entrances to your home.
  • Seal up cracks in windows, below doors and within screens. Make sure holes in walls or siding are sealed, too. This includes holes in roofs and around attics. Cockroaches are small and flat and can get in via almost any space.
