What are rodents?

Rodents are a species of gnawing mammal and are part of the scientific order of Rodentia. All species of rodent have large incisors which continuously grow, which requires them to chew and gnaw on things to control the growth. Rodents are found on every continent on the planet with the exception of Antarctica.

In North America, when it comes to homes and commercial properties, the most common types of rodents found as pests are mice and rats. However, there are other rodents which can cause damage to property including:

Throughout the world there are all manner of rodents in a variety of sizes, shapes and social orders.

How do rodents get inside?

Rodents will use just about any space they can find to get inside a building or home. Since their teeth are constantly growing and they have an innate instinct to gnaw and chew to control this, they are also perfectly capable of chewing their way into buildings, including through wood and even aluminum siding. Some species of rat have teeth so sharp and strong they can even chew through some types of softer stone or concrete.

Rodents get inside in order to find shelter and build their nests. Most species of rodent also have collapsible skeletons which allow them to make their body very narrow in order to scurry through openings. This means holes as narrow as a pencil or spaces beneath doors that are just barely a few inches off the ground provide access.

Get rid of rodents through prevention

The key to getting rid of a rodent problem is to make your property less attractive to them. Rodents will get inside the smallest spaces and hide, building their nests and reproducing at a very fast rate. This is why experts are really needed to remove rodents and get rid of a rodent problem effectively. However, if you are a property owner, the best method of getting rid of rodent problems is to prevent rodents in the first place.

Some of the things you can do to stop rodents from finding your property attractive in the first place include:

  • Store food in sealed containers
  • Keep outdoor areas clean and tidy to remove hiding places
  • Secure outdoor garbage containers
  • Keep gardens cleaned and neat

To stop rodents from getting onto your property, you can do some of the following:

  • Make sure doors go all the way to the ground using door sweeps. This includes garage doors and any exterior doors
  • Seal up the gaps. Search your property and make sure siding, screens and walls are free of holes rodents can use to access your home.
  • Repair roofs. A rat can easily get into attics or between walls by using damaged roof tiles and shingles for access. Make sure roofs are repaired.
  • Secure basement toilets, drains and sewers. There are some species of rat that are great swimmers and have been known to swim right up sewer lines and access basements through toilets or sewers. Keeping toilet lids closed prevents them from getting inside while adding small grates or gates to drains and sewers can stop them, too.
  • Remove firewood and clutters. Stacks of firewood right up against your house or building is a perfect place for rodents to hide and then get easy access to walls and to make their way in. Remove the clutter and remove their hiding places.
