Ants: The complete guide

Learn everything you need to know about ants and how they behave.

Control ants: the Ehrlich way

Ant removal is a very specific process. We offer various treatment options dependent upon several factors to effectively get rid of ants. Selecting the most effective treatment method to completely eliminate the ant colony depends on the following:

  • Species of ant
  • Size of the infestation
  • Infestation location (indoors or outdoors)
  • Property type (commercial or residential)

If you are noticing signs of ants on your property, contact us and one of our pest control specialists will schedule a time that is convenient for you for a free inspection inside and outside your premises. After inspection, your specialist will recommend a treatment plan based on your infestation and your property, providing you with an estimated cost. Once approved, your specialist will put the treatment plan in motion, providing you with an ant-free home.

Control ants

Our ant treatment process

Ants are very persistent, and when there is one, there are more. Ants leave pheromone trails to alert the other members of the colony where to go to get the food. An ant’s pheromone trail can last even longer than any deterrent material, which is why they often require multiple services to completely eliminate them.

At the start of your inspection, your technician will look for all areas where the ants may be nesting, as well as where they are traveling to and from. Your technician will use a combination of residual material and baits to work on eliminating the colonies around the home and prevent new colonies from developing.

Due to the persistent nature of this pest, we recommend that you treat ants as a part of our year-round preventative mainteance plan, PestFree365+. With PestFree365+, your technician will visit seasonally to employ prevention methods so the ants do not come back, while also working to break the life cycle of these pests on the exterior for long-term peace of mind.

Ant removal methods

Below are a few of our custom removal processes per species.

Carpenter ant removal

The carpenter ant control process begins with your specialist identifying all carpenter ant satellite colonies and nests. Although various baits and bait formulations are available, the primary methods for carpenter ant control are nest and barrier treatments. Perimeter treatments are also commonly applied to the exterior of the structure.

Odorous house ant removal

If an infestation of odorous house ants is identified on your property, your specialist will track the ants by their trails to the nest. Treatment will be applied to the ant colony’s trails and nest(s). To ensure that no new trails are established after the initial treatment, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled 7-10 days later.

Red imported fire ant removal

Red imported fire ants have been a nuisance to homeowners in southern states like Florida and South Carolina. The most common solution for red imported fire ants is a treatment application near the mounds. The ants will feed on the bait and return it to the colony. Once the bait kills the queen fire ant, the colony will collapse. We recommend that red imported fire ant treatments are conducted early in the spring to decrease the likelihood of major infestations.

Why do I need ant control?

Ant infestations grow quickly and are much easier to treat before they get too large. Over-the-counter ant repellent sprays and DIY methods can create larger problems, causing ants to split in different directions in a process called “budding.” This can lead to entirely new colonies being formed. These at-home methods typically only target a portion of the infestation, and with ants, you need to eliminate the entire colony.

Working with Ehrlich, your specialist will ensure all the ants and their colony, in its entirety, have been eliminated. This will leave you stress-free, giving you peace of mind to relax in your home.

How can I prevent ants?

The best way to prevent ants from coming into your home is to remove the things that are attracting them to your property, such as food and liquid spills, pet food, and dirt. Ants will keep returning unless changes are made around your property and within your home.

What are the signs of an ant infestation?

A few signs of an ant infestation are numerous live ants in your kitchen, ant pathways or trails in and out of your home, and ant nests.

Why do I have a lot of ants in my yard?

Ants are searching for three things: food, shelter, and water. If your yard provides those three essentials to ants, then you will most likely end up with ants nesting near your home. We would recommend having a specialist come perform a property inspection to see what areas of your yard may be attracting ants.

Why do I suddenly have ants in my house?

Ants are looking for food, shelter, and water. They will eat just about anything, but prefer sweets. If you have any tiny openings in your home - think holes in window or door screens, cracks in the foundation, openings under doorways - ants can crawl right in searching for their next meal.

Can you do your own ant control?

It is not recommended to perform ant control on your own. Though some DIY solutions may solve an ant problem temporarily, these methods do not eliminate the entire ant colony as they only act to deter the ants and do not get rid of the whole ant colony and their nest.
