The first thing that we do is inspect your property. We are looking for potential nesting places for mosquitoes and ticks. We seek out those hiding places and offer solutions to get rid of the insects that are already there and prevent them from coming back.

Our pest control experts will apply a barrier treatment all around the perimeter of your yard and around the building or home. We make sure to treat all of those places where mosquitoes like to rest during the day and the areas ticks call home. This kills the adult insects, but the long-lasting treatment will keep them from coming back.

It takes a few applications of the treatment for it to be effective. A successful mosquito or tick barrier may take anywhere from 5 to 7 applications. Our highly trained pest control specialists can even help prevent mosquitoes and ticks from invading a special event you have planned. The products we use leave behind no odors and last for 30 days. Plenty of time for that event to take place bite-free.

More than just an annoying bite

Mosquitoes and ticks feed on people and warm-blooded creatures. Both insects need blood to reproduce and their favorite blood sources include humans and pets.

In the case of ticks and mosquitoes, you probably first realize you’ve been bitten when you find red bumps and start itching the area of the bite. If there are itchy, red bumps all over your legs, arms and neck, you’ve probably been visited by mosquitoes. When it comes to ticks, you might still find the little critters attached to your body, getting bigger as they fill with blood.

Yes, those bites itch, but it’s more than that. The real risk that comes with mosquitoes and ticks is that they carry disease and some are serious.

Mosquito and tick borne diseases and health risks

Mosquitoes are actually considered the deadliest animal on the planet. The diseases carried and transmitted by mosquitoes cause serious illness and fatal infections across the globe. Diseases attributed to mosquitoes include:

  • Malaria
  • West Nile Virus
  • Encephalitis
  • Canine heart worm
  • Dengue fever
  • Yellow fever
  • Zika Virus

Ticks latch on tight and keep drinking blood until they become engorged and then drop off. Their mouth parts can cause numerous diseases including:

  • Lyme disease
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
  • Typhus
  • Relapsing fever

Nearly every one of those diseases can be debilitating and some of them can even be fatal.

Look for mosquito or tick habitats

Mosquitoes feed during dusk and dawn hours, but during the day they rest in places like vegetation located in cool, damp or shady areas. They might be on trees or bushes with lots of shade or hiding under decks or other areas around your home.

They also like to stay close to sources of still water because that is where they prefer to lay their eggs. There are some mosquito species that can lay and hatch eggs in a puddle left by a storm, however, they can also lay eggs in flower pots, old tires, ponds, marshes, bird baths or any standing water.

Ticks prefer wooded areas and are particularly fond of long grasses and thick vegetation. An adult tick will crawl to the top of a long blade of grass and wave its front legs around in a manner known as “questing.” They sense when a good host is coming and use their hooked feet to latch on to legs or fur and then spend hours crawling around looking for a good place to feed.

Advice on mosquito and tick prevention

The next step is to removing potential habitats by making sure there’s no standing water on your property. Make sure that the screens to your windows are tight and free from holes. Don’t leave doors open to let mosquitoes in. Cutting back on vegetation that encroaches on your property and offers those cool, shady areas to rest helps, too.

For ticks, the best solution is to cut back the vegetation from the perimeter of your property. This includes long grass and any type of vegetation that is long enough for a tick to use to hitch a ride.

As for preventing bites, we recommend the below tips:

  • Wear long sleeves and tuck pants into your boots to limit the areas where mosquitoes and ticks can feed on your body.
  • Stay inside during the early evening or early morning hours to avoid mosquito feeding times.
  • For both mosquitoes and ticks, spraying yourself with an insect repellent containing DEET will reduce bites.

Enjoy the summer bite-free

If you get the right treatments and take the right precautions for yourself, your family, and your pets, you can enjoy the outdoors all summer long. Given the potential health risks, this prevention makes sense and it really will go a long way toward helping you enjoy those outdoor summer activities.
