Termite pest control and treatment services

Termites cause more damage to homes and businesses than any other pest, costing homeowners nearly five billion dollars in property damage each year.1 These tiny, wood-munching menaces work silently and diligently to devour your home’s wooden components. The damage they inflict isn't just cosmetic; it can compromise the structural integrity, potentially leading to costly repairs. Here are some common signs that termites may have moved in:

  • Mud tubes: Narrow, pencil-sized tunnels made of mud on walls or foundations.
  • Wood damage: Hollowed-out or crumbling wood, often with a honeycomb appearance.
  • Swarmers: Winged insects resembling flying ants, often seen near windows or lights.
  • Visible wings: Discarded wings left behind near windows or other entry points.
  • Frass: Small wood-colored droppings that look like sawdust.
  • Bubbling paint or peeling wallpaper: Areas where the paint or wallpaper appears droopy or blistered.
  • Damaged flooring: Buckling, sagging, or warped floorboards.

Ignoring these signs is not an option. Getting ahead of the game and catching them early is the best way to save your home and wallet. Working with a professional termite control company, like Ehrlich, is the best and most effective way to control and eliminate termites on your property. Our local pest control experts have the knowledge and tools to effectively treat subterranean and drywood termite infestations. Contact us today to schedule a free termite inspection.

Control termites: the Ehrlich way

Suspecting termites can be stressful, but Ehrlich's process is designed to bring you peace of mind. We believe in a clear, step-by-step approach, ensuring you understand every stage of termite control. Here's a look at what you can expect:

Before

It all starts with a thorough inspection. Ehrlich technicians examine your property, identifying termite species, infestation levels, and potential entry points. This detailed assessment allows them to create a customized termite control plan.

During

Ehrlich technicians use various methods depending on the infestation's severity, type, and size. Your technician may use one or a combination of the following methods: liquid treatments, baiting systems, spot treatments, or fumigation.

After

Following the termite treatment, Ehrlich technicians conduct a post-treatment inspection to confirm the elimination of termites. We'll provide recommendations for preventative measures to help minimize the risk of future infestations. Regular follow-up inspections can be scheduled to ensure ongoing protection.

Ehrlich's termite treatment methods

If you suspect a termite presence in your home, there are some common DIY methods people often try to address minor issues. Keep in mind that while these methods might provide temporary relief, they may not completely eliminate an infestation. Some commonly used DIY termite control methods include boric acid, cardboard traps, essential oils, or vinegar. While these might seem like budget-friendly options, they often miss the core problem—the colony. That's why professional termite pest control is the best way to eliminate termites effectively.

Ehrlich technicians know how to exterminate termites and understand the specific challenges that different regions present. In the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, we target the common Eastern subterranean termites, and in the South, we combat the more aggressive Formosan termites. We can also effectively address drywood termites, providing comprehensive termite pest control services tailored to your specific location. Our methods and service costs can vary depending on the home’s size, the termite type, and the severity of the infestation.

Ehrlich technicians are trained in how to get rid of termites using the most advanced techniques. Depending on the type of termite, they will recommend one or more of the following termite control solutions:

Termite bait stations

Due to their nature, baiting stations are an environmentally friendly termite control solution causing almost no inconvenience to homeowners. This termite treatment offers peace of mind, as the bait stations continue to prevent future termites from entering your home.

Bait stations are child and pet-resistant. The active ingredient in a termite bait station eliminates termites by disrupting a molting process that occurs only in insects and closely related organisms.

How termite bait stations work:

  • Bait stations are installed around the perimeter of your home.
  • While foraging for food, termites will find the bait stations and take the bait back to the colony.
  • Once the bait spreads, active termites are gradually eliminated.
  • Your technician will periodically inspect for activity and to replace the bait when needed.

Targeted termites:

  • Subterranean termites
  • Formosan termites

Termite liquid treatments

Liquid treatment application is a preventive and curative solution that protects your property by applying termite treatment to the soil underneath and around the perimeter of your home. As termites dig toward your house, they come in contact with the liquid treatment. When they return to their colony, they transfer the treatment to other termites, eliminating them.

How liquid treatment works:

  • Liquid treatment is applied to the soil.
  • As termites forage for food, they come into contact with treatment.
  • The treatment will typically kill the termites on contact.
  • For termites not killed immediately, they spread the treatment as they naturally return to the colony.

Targeted termites:

  • Subterranean termites
  • Formosan termites

Termite spot treatments

Spot treatments address localized termite concerns inside your home. This termite control method includes wood/slab applications or drilling treatments that focus on addressing specific threats to your house's wood structures. This option is typically used for termite infestations that affect the inside of your home. This option may involve drilling directly into wood to apply the product.

How spot treatment works:

  • The treatment is designed to address local termite infestations.
  • The product is applied directly to wood supports or under slabs and wall voids inside your home.
  • Termites feed on treated wood with the product and return it to the colony.
  • Your technician will perform periodic inspections and reinforce the protective treatment application as needed.

Targeted termites:

  • Drywood termites
  • Subterranean termites
  • Formosan termites

Home tenting for termite fumigation

Home fumigation is the most invasive but, depending on the extent of the infestation, the most effective termite treatment for drywood termites. Home fumigations are reserved for severe termite infestations, and residents are required to leave during the fumigation process.

Fumigation is a complex activity with many variables that need to be considered for it to be carried out safely. Fumigation must be completed by licensed termite control professionals with the required knowledge, skills, and experience.

How home fumigation works:

  • The affected property is sealed off and filled with a pesticide gas.

  • The gas is held at a high concentration for enough time to kill any drywood termites in the fumigated area.
  • Your technician confirms sufficient fumigation time and exposure.
  • The fumigation tent is vented, leaving no surface residue left behind.

Targeted termites:

  • Drywood termites

Common termite questions

We’re frequently asked a lot of questions about termites – everything from ‘What do termites look like?’ to ‘How much does termite control cost?’. Here are some of the most common questions from our customers:

The cost of termite treatment varies based on factors like the type of termite, the severity of the infestation, and the size of the affected area. You can use our new pricing tool to get an estimated cost or contact your local Ehrlich branch to discuss your termite problem. Early intervention can save you from expensive repairs down the line.

Preparing for termite treatment depends on the method being used. For liquid termiticide applications, preparation might involve moving furniture away from walls and ensuring easy access to crawl spaces. For tent fumigation (used for drywood termites), you’ll need to vacate your home for a few days. You should also plan to seal or remove any food, medications, and plants from the premises. Your termite control technician will guide you on specific steps, ensuring your home is ready for treatment.

The most effective treatment for termites depends on the species and extent of the infestation. Subterranean termites, for example, are best treated with liquid termiticides or bait stations, which target their colonies in the soil. For drywood termites, tent fumigation or localized wood treatments are often the best options.

The chemicals used in termite treatment are known as termiticides. These chemicals either kill termites on contact or disrupt their molting process, ultimately eradicating the colony. Liquid termiticides are typically applied to the soil under and around the foundation and in the crawl space under your home. In bait systems, slow-acting toxicants are used, which allow worker termites to carry the termiticide back to their colony, gradually eliminating it. Your Ehrlich technician will advise on the best course of treatment and can give you detailed information about the specific termiticides to be used.
