Got a sneaking feeling that you may have a termite problem? Correctly identifying termite damage early is crucial!
Termites are insects that live in colonies below the soil surface, and are sometimes known as White Ants. Termites are social creatures, so where there is one, you will find many!
There are in excess of 2,600 species of termite around the world, but only about 5% of these are of significant pests to homes and buildings. These termites enter structures from hidden pathways under floors and in foundation walls. When this happens, they become the cause of billions of dollars worth of damage every year.
Colonies consist of:
Workers – These make up the majority of the colony, and they eat wood to feed the other members, therefore well known for the damage associated with termite infestation!
Soldiers – These protect the colony, using strong jaws to keep out invaders such as ants.
Swarmers (reproductives) – The winged adults are the termites that are most often seen by homeowners.
In North America, of particular interest are dampwood, drywood, and subterranean termites because they are a threat to structures. With literally millions of members in a very well organised colony, it is no wonder that they can cause so much damage to buildings when they are working together to find food.
