Moth pest control

Moths can be found all over the United States, and although they do not pose a health risk, their larvae can cause severe damage to materials, textiles, and stored products.

Once inside your home or business, moths look for food in the form of natural fibers, including carpets, clothes, fabrics, fur, and even leather. Their caterpillars eat protein (keratin) found in natural materials like wool, cotton, and silk. They can also be pantry pests and infest stored food products like grains, cereals, and flour.

When you need moth pest control, you can count on the technicians at Ehrlich to help protect your cherished personal belongings from these pests.

Moth control and treatments

As experts in moth pest control, our technicians are able to offer tailored solutions and preventative advice. Our treatments can remove moths and their eggs and larvae – even in delicate items.

Our technicians will identify the moth species invading your home and provide custom solutions for your unique needs. Your Ehrlich technician will select a treatment method based on species, environment, number of stored products infested, type of structure, and more.

We have a variety of moth control programs to help remove moths in your home or business. When dealing with stored product moths, our technicians may recommend non-chemical control methods such as temperature control, sanitation, or storage solutions. Fabric pests are commonly treated by non-chemical control methods and conventional materials such as liquid sprays and dust.

For commercial accounts, fumigation or chemical treatments may be recommended. Once treatment is complete, under renewable plans, our technicians will continue to monitor the area to ensure the infestation is under control.

Types of moths

Moth control might not always look the same. If you need pest control for moths, here are some of the different species you may encounter:

Pantry moths

Pantry moths are one of the most common kitchen invaders. These pests are usually found near stored food and can quickly multiply if not addressed. Effective pantry moth extermination involves removing infested items and treating affected areas.

Clothes moths

Clothes moths are a leading cause of fabric damage in homes. If left untreated, these pests target natural fibers and can ruin clothes, rugs, and upholstery. Clothes moth extermination typically involves identifying infested areas and protecting delicate items.

Indian meal moths

Indian meal moths are one of the most frustrating moth problems found in pantries. If you're seeing small moths near your food, you may need indian meal moth extermination services.

Carpet moths

Carpet moths are another common fabric pest that can cause damage similar to clothes moths. These pests target wool and other natural fibers found in rugs and carpets.

Brown house moth

The brown house moth is brown with three to four dark spots and measures 8–14 mm long. A scavenger by nature, it feeds on natural materials like food, hair, carpet, and clothing.

Common clothes moth

The common clothes moth has straw-colored, unmarked wings with fringed edges and measures 6–8 mm long. Its larvae feed on animal fibers like wool and silk. Adults avoid light, run instead of flying, and do not feed.

Case-bearing moth

The case-bearing moth has dark buff forewings with faint spots and measures 6–8 mm long. Its larvae feed on wool, fur, and carpets. Less common than clothes moths, it is often found in imported animal materials like hides.

White-shouldered moth

The white-shouldered moth has a white head and mottled wings, measuring 6–8 mm long. Its cream-colored larvae feed on grains, cereals, wool, and other materials. Typically found in unheated outbuildings, the larvae scavenge across a broad range of foods.

DIY and natural moth deterrents

  • Keep screens on your doors and windows
  • Seal holes and cracks in your foundation
  • Regularly vacuum and dust to eliminate food sources
  • Use airtight storage containers for clothes and other fabrics
  • Wash all fabrics, linens, and other materials in the affected area
  • Store food products like grains, flour, cereal, and pet food in sealed plastic or glass containers
  • Keep your pantry clean and tidy, and remove expired products
  • Use cedar chips or blocks, mothballs, and essential oils like lavender or peppermint to deter moths

Frequently asked pest control questions

Moths are attracted to light. Once inside your home, they seek out food sources such as natural fibers, textiles, and stored products.

The lifecycle of a moth has four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Once female moths lay their eggs, the moth then hatches into a larva, also known as a caterpillar. Their larva continues to develop, molting its skin several times as it grows. Once they reach maturity, the moth will create a cocoon to pupate in as it morphs into an adult moth, eventually emerging from the cocoon to begin a new lifecycle by laying eggs.

Fabric moth removal is covered under our PestFree365+ plan*. This plan not only offers moth pest control, but also covers over 39 common household pests. We offer free home inspections to help assess your needs. For a more accurate estimate based on your situation, you can start your free quote.

The most effective approach is to remove infested items, clean thoroughly, and call a professional. Our moth pest control service targets adult moths, larvae, and eggs to help stop the infestation.

You may have brought them in with infested food or fabrics. Moths are also attracted to homes by light and can enter through small openings or gaps.

The most effective pest control for moths often combines inspection, cleaning, and targeted treatments. DIY methods may offer temporary relief, but for full protection, a professional moth exterminator is recommended.

It depends on the type of repellent used and where it's applied. Some natural deterrents lose effectiveness within weeks.
