Reading, PA, Mar. 14, 2014 - Termites cause American homes annual damage estimated at $5 billion. To promote public vigilance and educate homeowners about the threat of termites and the possible signs of an infestation this spring, the Rentokil family of pest control companies (Ehrlich Pest Control, Western Exterminator, and Presto-X Pest Control), offer information on how to spot termites in the home as part of Termite Awareness Week, March 16-22, an annual observance by the National Pest Management Association.
“Pest proofing and home improvement projects are often designated to the spring season. Now is the perfect time of year for homeowners to take the necessary steps to protect their greatest investment from costly damage,” said Nancy Troyano, PhD, entomologist for Rentokil. “The sooner nests are located and destroyed the more likely property owners will be able to avoid major termite damage.
Here are a few clues that termites may be present in a home:
“It is important for homeowners to pay particular attention to any area of a structure where wood contacts the soil, as this wood is the most at risk for a termite infestation,” added Troyano. “If homeowners notice any of these signs, it is advisable to contact a pest professional who can best determine the extent of the problem and recommend a proper treatment plan.”
