Identifying Mice in Your Home

Want to know which species of mouse is in your house? It’s helpful to know which species of mouse has invaded your home as this may be useful when setting baits or mouse traps. 

Mice Found in Homes

There are some species of mouse, which are more commonly found in homes than others. There are certain characteristics you can look for, to help to identify the mice in your property.

House Mouse

  • Head and feet are proportional to the body.
  • A house mouse’s tail is as long as head and body combined.
  • Back, feet, and belly are all the same color in house mice.
  • House mice have flat upper incisors.

Deer Mouse / Field Mouse 

(Peromyscus maniculatus / Apodemus sylvaticus)

  • Long tails that are mostly hairless.
  • Have fur which is sandy / orange brown on the head and back, yellowish on the flanks and white on the belly.
  • There is usually a small streak of yellow on the chest.
  • Often referred to as Wood mouse.

Yellow Necked Field Mouse

  • Brown fur on their backs and white on the underside.
  • Distinctive complete band of yellow fur around the neck.
  • Large ears, protruding eyes and a long tail.
