There are a number of measures you can take as a property owner to prevent flies from infesting your property.
Seal up entry points - Inspect the exterior of your property and identify any potential access points for flies. Flies can gain entry to your home or commercial property through open doors, dock windows and broken or open windows. Pay close attention to areas around your property where garbage is stored.
Remove discarded or overflowing garbage - Sanitation is key to getting rid of flies. Inspect your garbage bins or dumpsters for garbage overflow as this is a common cause of fly issues. There may also be a dead animal carcass that could be attracting blow flies or flesh flies.
Clean garbage bins/dumpsters - Dirty garbage cans and dumpsters are a common cause of fly infestations. If you notice flies or maggots on your bins or dumpsters, it is recommended to have them cleaned and to have them emptied on a more frequent basis. For commercial dumpsters, it is possible to have sanitation companies replace your dumpsters with clean ones.
Remove decaying vegetation - Inspect your property and the adjacent properties for decaying vegetation that could be attracting flies. Flies can become a problem especially when properties place straw on their landscaping to grow grass. The straw decays and provides an excellent breeding ground for flies.
Clean out drains - Drain flies can be a major issue for customers, especially for clients in commercial businesses that handle food like restaurants and bars. Cleaning out your drain regularly can reduce the likelihood of a fly infestation occurring. Ehrlich offers a drain-line cleaning service that breaks down the grease and build up in drains and helps eliminate fly breeding sites as well as foul odors.
Once a survey of your premises is complete, your Ehrlich expert will recommend a fly control treatment program specially for your needs. It may include one, or a combination, of the following:
Used in conjunction with Exclusion, Restriction and Monitoring practices you will have effective, long-term protection from flies for your business.
